Reasons and remedies:

Knee, the largest joint of our body that supports the whole body weight, sometimes suffers from pain and injuries. Before to cure the knee joint pain you should know the actual reason behind this. Hopefully this article will be a useful aid for those who go through this pain on daily basis.

Knee joint pain can be due to several reasons like if you are suffering from arthritis, gout, ligament/cartilage injuries or bursitis. Our knee has two main muscles called quadriceps and hamstrings. These two muscles help in extending and bending our legs respectively. Knee joint injuries can be prevented to larger extent if these muscles are strong. Exercise is the best way for this, but overstretching of knee muscles is not recommendable.

NSAIDS(non-steroidal anti inflammatory drugs) is the best friend of knee joint pain sufferer. These drugs are Ibuprofen, Aleve, Tylenol, Aspirin etc. These reduce swelling, stiffness and relief pain. But consult your doctor about dosage and allergies

ICE(ice compress and elevate) is another significant method for knee joint pain relief. Get off your painful knee and elevate it above your hip level. Apply an ice bag (a frozen bag of peas is excellent for this) to your knee and keep it there for about twenty minutes. Then wrap your knee with a compression bandage, like an Ace wrap, to support it until the pain is reduced. By giving it some compression, you are encouraging any fluid buildup to “disperse”, which will alleviate pain.

Cure of knee joint pain with exercise:

Here are some exercises to relief the knee joint pain.

  • Stand about 2 feet from a wall with your feet together, then lean forward and brace yourself against the wall. Don’t lean so far that you feel pain. This stretches the Achilles tendon.
  • With your back erect, sit in a chair. Extend one leg. Hold it out for 5 seconds. Lower it slowly. Do this with your other leg. This strengthens the knee and helps improve knee flexibility.
  • Lie on your back and push your knees toward the floor. Hold for 5 seconds. Then relax your leg muscles. It might not feel strenuous, but this exercise strengthens the quadriceps, important muscles that support the knee.
  • This exercise is great if you have kneecap pain. Lie on your back with a pillow under your knees. Straighten a leg and hold it raised (about 5inches above) for 5 seconds, then lower it slowly. Repeat ten times on each leg.
  • Lie on your right side with your right leg bent and your left arm supporting you. Lift the left leg, keeping it straight. Hold it raised for 5 seconds before slowly lowering it. Repeat ten times, then switch legs.

Consult an orthopedic if the knee joint pain continues. Don’t be afraid of surgery as this is not the only solution for knee joint pain. There are many other medical treatments for this.
